The tv talk shows and their incessant polls tell a very important story. The elections in November will be very, very close in a very polarized electorate.
Political pros call this scenario a turnout election, which means that whoever does the best job of getting their supporters to vote will win.
The key to turnout is organizing.
Organizing skills this fall will be essential for victory.
Of course, President Obama's campaign team is already at work in the critical states, and they will have a huge and very effective operation.
But that is not enough. All of us who are progressives must throw ourselves into the organizing effort. We can work through our unions to turn out the labor vote. We can work through our community organizations, civil rights groups, women's groups, and LGBT groups. We can door knock our neighborhoods and precincts. We can sign up as organizers with the President's team.
All of us progressives need to become organizers this summer and fall.
Only the future of our nation is at stake.
Please order a copy of my book Playing Bigger Than You Are: A Life in Organizing to see how you can be a more effective organizer.
