Texas Democrats got crushed in the 2010 elections. With the wave election we lost any power we had been building over the last 10 years. Republicans got a super majority and did their worst. Things have gotten so bad that I think it gave us a wake up call. Instead of continuing on as we had been, a group of talented and dedicated individuals got together and pushed for massive change. I think they have set us on a better path.
The Texas Democratic Party held our state convention at the beginning of June. I have to tell you that it was one of the most progressive conventions I had ever attended in Texas. We might not have power, but a vision has been presented and we are running with it. First off, we elected our first Hispanic State Party Chair, Judge Gilberto Hinojosa. He is unabashedly liberal. Unafraid to speak out for what he believes in.
We also redid our platform adding 3 very important new items:
1. We support marriage equality.
2. We support the Dream Act. Thank you President Obama!
3. We support the decriminalization of Marijuana.
Imagine my surprise when I was watching The Last Word and Lawrence O'Donnell's rewrite segment was on what we had done!
