This question just popped into my mind... What institution is more corrupt and in need of house cleaning or rules changing to create more fair and functional government? The U.S. Supreme Court or the U.S. Senate?
The Supreme Court is nominated for their 1 sided activism on conservative issues. Citizens United decision backed up with this week's overturning of a century of Montana common-sense campaign finance law and squelching the recounts in Florida in 2000 are just a couple examples of the corruption or appearance of such. Justice Thomas seems to think he is above the need to accurately self-report on issues that might cause conflicts of interest. Scalia? Doesn't even try to appear impartial.
The U.S. Senate? Oh, where do I start? Probably the same place i finish... the Filibuster. This antiquated Senate rule of comity and deference to a speaking Senator has essentially rewritten the US Constitutional requirement of a majority to approve bills, cabinet nominees and treaties to the de facto 60% super-majority to do anything. The speaking senator part? Not even necessary anymore. They can just threaten to speak a lot, and never have to actually do it. Thus, the Senate is now the place where a 41% minority can block the will of the majority on anything and everything, not just on the issues they are willing to take a public crusade on the floor of the Senate to defeat.
After drafting this, I did add another option... the media, since they are the supposed 4th branch of government. And as has been noted here so often, their he-said-she-said fair and balanced reporting means the state of current journalism is really just reporting opposing statements, not the reporting of... ya know... facts.
So, which institution gets your vote? Or should we wait until tomorrow's Obamacare decision? :)
