I just noticed this in the Miami Herald. I have not seen it reported anywhere else. Guantanamo will get a 40 Million Dollar Fiber Optic link which will be run underwater from Guantanamo Cuba to somewhere in South Florida. I think this is a disgusting usage of taxpayer dollars or any dollars for any American entity at all. The United States lease at Guantanamo is officially disputed by Cuba and should be, it is immoral and gives fuel to the Castro brothers for keeping their grip on power!
But now, imagine the scope of the project at hand. They will need to lay at least 200 miles of Fiber Optic cable to cover at least a hundred miles. How will that affect the sensitive Caribbean Ocean area where the project will move forward? And what does this say about our long term intention at Guantanamo, where there are still a whole lot of prisoners being Illegally held without proper trials and tortured ???
Well it is no surprise that that former Bush era head of detainee policy Cully Stimson is a Heritage Foundation peep and says “It may be a fiscally prudent use of taxpayer funds.”
Is this the same Heritage Foundation that mused ACA into existence and is now calling it caca?
That prisoners are still in Guantanamo while this project is moving forward is alarming enough, as we thought Obama would move to close the prison in his first 4 years and Im really hoping he wins and comes in balls to the wall his next 4 and manages to close the prison.
But according to Stimson "the investment in the infrastructure does not necessarily signal that the Pentagon is now preparing for detention of prisoners at Guantánamo forever" Great< thanks. I am really relieved .....
Stimson sounds even more comforting in the next quote when he says that even if Obama succeeds in closing Guantanamo " the infrastructure there could be put to other use"
What a moronic and completely arrogant position.
FIRST OF ALL THE UNITED STATES LEASES GUANTANAMO
I lease my apartment and I would never think to run a cable line from my apartment in Brooklyn to California, or New Jersey for that matter. The most I can do legally is run a cable from my backyard to the nearest light post. How does Cuba not say anything or let this go on? Maybe they get no respect for their criminal acts on their own people? I think though it probably benefits Cuba to have a reliable yankee scapegoat!
Still the US is basically spending BILLIONS on infrastructure in a leased section of an island and in the islands waters when even the lease they have is ILLEGAL
THE US LEASE OF GUANTANAMO IS ILLEGAL
After the Spanish- American War the United States was "given" a perpetual lease of Guantanamo by Thomas Estrada Palma. The US was in COMPLETE CONTROL of Cuba at the time (for 5 years) after fighting off the Spanish who had purportedly sunk the US battleship Maine. What a bargain for Estrada Palma "We either keep the whole island.... or lease Guantanamo for ETERNITY!"
OK I am steaming and it is HOT as HELL in Brooklyn. I got to get out of here but this story made me SICK! I am CUBAN and AMERICAN and It pisses me off that the US is even in Guantanamo. Get the hell out and stop using my money for stupid underwater covert communications to torture prisoners in dark secret prisons. I even read that prisoners who cooperate are offered "HAPPY MEALS" from McDonalds located in SOMEWHERE IN GTMO. HAPPY BIRTHDAY USA!
