The Day That Was: Day 6
Highlights
Today saw a lot of success for the USA...
- Gabrielle Douglas took gold in the women's all-around gymnastics
- Michael Phelps added to his small stack of gold medals with a victory in the 200m free
- Tyler Clary and Rebecca Soni got some nice gold hardware in the 200m backstroke and 200m breaststroke, respectively
- Kayla Harrison won gold in the women's half heavyweight judo
- The USA women's eight won gold in rowing
All that gold-medal-winning has pulled the USA even with China in the gold department, and four ahead in total medals.
Today we're going to start transitioning from swimming to track and field, with men's shotput and the women's 10,000 meter run.
Also, from the "Holy crap, seriously?!" files: When Chinese synchro diver Wu Minxia won the gold medal, her father told her all of the things he'd been hiding from her, for fear that it would knock her off her game emotionally—like the fact that her grandparents died more than a year ago, and her mother has been battling breast cancer for the past eight years. I can only imagine that conversation:
"Congratulations on the gold medal! Your mother and I always believed in you! Oh, and about her, she's been fighting off breast cancer for eight years."
"What?! Why didn't you tell me?"
"I didn't want to disturb your training."
"um... thanks. I'm just glad she got to watch me win here. And I'm sure everyone was watching at home, too! Have you talked to Grandma and Grandpa yet? Were they watching?"
"ummmm... about that..."
