Mitt Romney struggles to respond to the Nuns invitation
Network, a national Catholic Social Justice Lobby (Who brought us Nuns on the Bus), recently offered up an
invitation to Republican Presidential Nominee Mitt Romney,
[T]o spend a day with Catholic Sisters who work every day to meet the needs of struggling families in their communities and especially encourages Mr. Romney to work alongside the Sisters as they serve the people. These are the people who will be further harmed by his proposed budget cuts and by the terribly divisive and demeaning political advertisements about welfare.
Now, I would love to see the Mittster in his pressed jeans and starched shirt working with the poor in a homeless shelter; however, I am not sure Mitt is even aware that homeless shelters even exist. Now granted, if he did take up the sisters on their invitation it is likely that all he would end up doing is insult the nuns, the Catholic Church, the poor, and the people who volunteer at homeless shelters. I am sure the bunk beds in the shelter wouldn’t be the right height or that he has friends who own factories in China that make bunk beds.
Sister Simone Campbell sums it up nicely when she says,
“Recent advertisements and statements from the campaign of Governor Romney demonize families in poverty and reflect woeful ignorance about the challenges faced by tens of millions of American families in these tough economic times. We are all God’s children and equal in God’s eyes. Efforts to divide us by class or score political points at the expense of the most vulnerable of our brothers and sisters reveal the worst side of our country’s politics.”
I for one am sick of the let’em starve mentality of the right wing in this country. Poverty is a major issue in this country. Ignoring it, taking away benefits, and treating the poor as a sub-class of human is not going to solve the problem. Complaining about it being a waste of money that people get a paltry welfare check to and a SNAP card that allows them to just survive, while at the same time giving billions in tax cuts to millionaires is hypocritical and just plain wrong. I would ask if Mitt and his fellow Republicans have no shame, but, I already know the answer. They don’t. They are nothing more than a bunch of selfish, greedy bastards who don’t care a lick for anyone but themselves.
I am not big into the whole religion thing; however, I stand up and applaud the Catholic Sisters. They are clearly on the right side in this class war.
