Greetings from sunny Charlotte, NC, where all is abuzz over the upcoming 2012 Democratic National Convention arriving in our fair city on Sept. 2, less than 20 days from now. I'm posting this diary in the hope of connecting with, and helping connect, other Kossacks who will be in town.
Charlotte, NC ... all traffic turn left.
Charlotte has been my home for almost eight years. It's a great city. It's not a perfect place by any means. But it's cooler and more diverse than most people think, once you get to know us!
I couldn't have been more excited when Charlotte was chosen to host the 2012 Democratic National Convention. When volunteer registration opened, I managed to confirm three evening shifts at the Convention Center. But the slots for Thursday night's Acceptance Speech went too fast for me ... bummer. I kept checking.
Finally, yesterday, I got an email. Additional shifts are available for the Thursday "Stadium Event" -- aka President Obama's acceptance speech! I logged right in to the volunteer portal and found exactly eleven shifts still open. The job description was ADA Support. I'm a nurse. Not only will I get to witness history ... I will get to use my real life skills (learned at a state-funded school, gasp!) to make the event accessible to all. And I will be there, live and in person, as we all witness history together. W00T!! :D
If you're going to be in town and are so inclined, I'd love to hear a little about your work and how you came to be a part of the convention. If there's interest in a meetup, I'd be happy to help coordinate it. Hope to see y'all in September!
