I didn't expect NPR to go negative so quickly. Maybe this was a just a local Utah insult. Did you hear this song being played in your area?
NPR Utah played this song in the background this morning while chatting about the Democratic Convention.
For those of you unfamiliar with the movie:
Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte
Is a movie about an aging, reclusive southern belle (Bette Davis), plagued by a horrifying family secret, descends into madness after the arrival of a lost relative.
Really, NPR? You could have picked a more upbeat song, agree? Sure, this song has a pretty melody, but it's about an insane woman!
Lyrics:
Hush hush, sweet Charlotte
Charlotte, don't you cry
Hush hush, sweet Charlotte
He'll love you till he dies
Oh, hold him darling
Please hold him tight
And brush the tear from your eye
You weep because you had a dream last night
You dreamed that he said goodbye
He held two roses within his hand
Two roses he gave to you
The red rose tells you of his passion
The white rose his love so true
(Chorus)
And every night after he shall die
Yes every night when he's gone
The wind will sing you this lullaby
Sweet Charlotte was loved by John
Yes, Charlotte, he loved you til he died. The insane woman, not the city.
I did a Google search for Carolina songs.
Here's a list of 100 songs I found by searching "Carolina Songs"
True, many are absolutely the wrong choice; however, perhaps this would have been a better choice:
In My Mind, I'm Going to Carolina
or, for the oldies
Nothing Could Be Finer, Than to be in Carolina:
But Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte? Really, NPR?
How morose, how tin earred, how absolutely unkind, in my opinion. Did anyone think this one through? Did you try to find a better song? Again, maybe this choice was simply a local Utah radio station choice. That would NOT surprise me. It's Utah! I hope this wasn't a National choice.
If this is happening nationally, perhaps chosing "Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte" as the background music while chatting about the Democratic National Convention was a calculated choice.
If so, I will have to rethink my annual contribution. Then again, the Right Wing would really like to kill NPR. What a conundrum! Democracy needs NPR.
