We've all had a good time making fun of John McCain -- it seems like there's always good news for him. But underneath the bumbling and the blockheadedness (Suspend the campaign! Sarah Palin!!!????), there is a fine person, and this we've seen before, for example in when that crazy lady started running down then Senator Obama at a townhall, in his gracious and dignified concession speech on the night of the 2008 election, and in defense of the woman who was attacked by Michele Bachmann and the rightwing paint huffers solely on account of her religion.
On Lawrence O'Donnell's show tonight, Senator McCain gave another example of this in his very moving and emotional tribule to Ambassador Chris Stevens. I tried to find a video of it, but couldn't. His prepared remarks are reprinted here. But I don't think they quite match what he said on the Senate floor, at least what I saw of it.
In the clip I saw on Lawrence O'Donnell's show, Senator McCain noted the great service that Ambassador Stevens had given both to our own country, and to he country of Libya, which Ambassador Stevens had also loved.
So I think that while I could never vote for Senator McCain, his wonderful speech today should give us some pause to think what we've lost through the hyperpartisanship that currently afflicts our polity.
That is all.
Pax.
