In this episode, we learn that yes, Victor Davis Hanson is still a jerk. Here's old VDH, the Hoover Institution's Humongous of the Wingnut Wasteland, the Ayatollah of Itoldyaso-a, today over at National Review:
Are we to believe that the Cairo embassy, when it issued its depressing communiqué (“The Embassy of the United States in Cairo condemns the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims”) had no knowledge that the Cairo street was simmering and most likely would shortly converge on the embassy? When I lived in Athens, it was pretty clear that the city’s morning shouting and organizing would in no time inevitably end up at the massive American embassy.
See, Athens is just like Cairo. VDH doesn't seem to realize that there is a difference between agreeing with someone's right to say something, and agreeing with what was being said.
Let me put it another way. Do I approve of cross-burning? No. But there seem to be at least some circumstances when cross burning may be protected speech under the First Amendment. But even if the KKK might find some legal way they can burn crosses, they're still racist scumbags.
Same deal here. Some shithead makes a movie that's insulting to Moslems. The embassy says "We don't approve of religious insults".
I see nothing wrong with that. Apparently VDH would only be happy if the embassy had said something like "Fuck off [fill in anti-Muslim derogatory name here]". So, yes, Victor Davis Hanson is still a jerk.
