I'm a latecomer to the iPhone. I did have the original iPhone way back in the day, but I wasn't really a huge fan of it, so I ended up getting rid of it and buying an LG Voyager, which I used for a few years. Then, after I threw that phone at the wall in a rage and broke it wore that phone out, I tried a couple of cheaper phones out until I finally just bought a Straight Talk phone. (I know, ironic that I used Straight Talk...laugh it up...) I used Straight Talk for what seems like forever--two or three years, I think. When I sent that phone through the washer back in February, I finally decided just to go all out and get the iPhone 4S. And I wasn't sorry.
Between Angry Birds and Amazing Alex and Tetris and Tiny Tower and Groupon and Grindr and God knows what other apps I have (and not to mention Siri), I couldn't be happier.
Or could I?
Yes, maybe I could. Follow me below the smashed LG voyager fold.

When people started ordering their iPhone 5's, I really, really wanted one. It doesn't help that my BF, whose contract is up, is excitedly ordering his. Everybody around me is all excited about getting their new toy. Then there's poor ol' me, who is not even halfway through his contract.
I'd anticipated that when I bought my 4S. I asked my Sprint salesperson what I'd have to go through to get the iPhone 5, and he assured me that, by the time I turned in my 4S and got the trade-in value for that, it wouldn't be as expensive as I thought. Of course, though, I didn't think about the early termination fee I'd have to pay to get out of my current contract early. When I started getting serious recently about getting an iPhone 5, I realized that it would be quite expensive indeed.
So, being me, I opened the Excel spreadsheet which holds my budget to see what I could cut. I felt like a Republican. Food costs? Hmmm, no, gotta eat. (damn my body and its petty needs...this is the iPhone 5 we're talking about!!) Netflix? No, I don't have a TV, gotta have Netflix. My car? Unless there's an app to haul my fat ass around, that wouldn't be wise.
It wasn't looking good in the budget department. And then I slapped myself and asked a question. For the first time, I asked myself, "What does the iPhone 5 do that my 4S doesn't?" Good question, no?
After a minimal amount of research, I found that there are basically six features I'd be gaining by getting an iPhone 5:
1. It's faster. It will work on 4G LTE networks, meaning I'll be able to watch videos faster. Sounds great. Except...I never watch videos on my iPhone. And I don't intend to start.
2. It's taller. Thing is, I like my 4S's size and shape. I've never desired more screen space. Frankly, I think it's rather ridiculous. If this is going to be a trend, imagine what the iPhone 20 will look like.
3. It has a better camera. Of course, I think my 4S's camera is phenomenal. What are the new camera features? I'll be able to shoot in panorama mode and take pictures while I'm filming video. Well hot damn, I can hardly contain my excitement...I've been aching for that...(or not)
4. It has longer battery life. This, admittedly, would be nice, especially since I play a shit-ton of games on my iPhone. But I've never run out of battery before. And I've only come close a handful of times. Not a priority.
5. It has an A6 processor, while the 4S has an A5 processor. So more computing power. Again...let me contain my excitement. I totally needed more computing space. (Um, no?)
6. It has a smaller charger port.
Yes, exactly what I've been waiting for...not?
So yeah. I think I'm okay with sticking with my 4S for the foreseeable future. I guess it pays to do a bit of research before you go out and blow money on "new" products. Maybe I'll wait for that iPhone 20.

This comment by TrueBlueMajority in today's Hate Mail-a-Palooza turns a letter-writer's assessment of Markos into an apt description of Mitt Romney and the thread which follows is priceless.
From your humble diarist:
In my diary about the recent polling uptick when it comes to marriage equality support, lighttheway asked a good question: How much further do the numbers need to move before the GOP does a 180? bnasley's response was perfect. It would be hilarious if it weren't true.
