The New York Times had to run a retraction on its July 18, 1982 article 'Modeling: New Faces From Old Families' when it was found Scott Brown had misrepresented his relationship to Arthur Prentice Rugg, former Chief Justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Court. Details below:
In May 1982, Scott Brown had been named Sexiest Man in America by Cosmo. In July that same year, The New York Times included Brown in its story about the modeling world having gained recruits from offspring of the well-known and well-to-do.
The article outlined Brown's experience as a law student at Boston College Law School frequently running across opinions written by his great-grandfather, Arthur Prentice Rugg, former Chief Justice of the MA Supreme Court.
"I read many of his cases this year," Brown said, "which I found amusing."
The fly in the ointment: Scott wasn't Rugg's great grandson, they were only distantly related. The Times
retraction was printed a week later.
Glass houses and stones, my friend.
