Recently, before the semester ended I was required to read an article about the privileged position of business. Aside from the usual helpless feeling most news articles provoke, it was probably one of the most enlightening experiences I've had in my college career. That article made it clear that our country, FROM THE BEGINNING, was built around business interests. Specifically, the whole idea of private property has given power to corporations over the people they employ: which is EVERYONE. For being a democratic country, corporations take the democratic process away from the individual, for they control every economic decision an individual can make. The right to private property allows for this to happen, and on a large scale it is oppressive!
My eureka moment came when I realized how simple it will be to fix this problem: we need a "peoples" lobbyist. If the status-quo is all we have to work with, then why not use it to our advantage. If we can somehow incorporate individual citizens into the lobbying process we can certainly influence policy in our favor. The ultimate question is how or who can organize something on a scale that unites the entire country?
