Very short diary as I'm at work and kind of busy.
Recently I've been trying to find new insurance for my daughter. She's 17 next month and I've had an individual policy on her since 2009. Which gets more and more expensive for less & less coverage each year.
More over the fold
So I've been calling around to various agents recommended by my house agent (she doesn't do health). They told me no one is writing child only policies.
I called several carriers directly only to be told the same thing but with the added sneer (yes I heard it) of: Well since Obamacare last year no one is writing child only policies because of the pre-existing conditions thing. Called Blue Cross Blue Shield, which is apparently a Florida company (I had no idea & I'm a Floridian) and was told those same exact words verbatim.
In reply I said, "why would you not cover children only? Doesn't logic dictate that if you have an adult like myself (I get care at the local VA clinic) who is willing to buy a policy for her kid that you should do it? Doesn't ensuring this child have preventive care in childhood make for a healthy adult when the time comes for her own coverage?" I was told, yes, but Obamacare.... I broke in on both people saying the same thing with this response: But Obamacare makes it so your ceo's and managers have less millions in bonuses but make you provide coverage to people paying for it. And ended the conversations.
Now to my question:
Does anyone know if this is legal with the healthcare law and are they allowed to discriminate like this? Or is there any kind of workaround and can you complain to HHS and actually speak to a person and get a result?
I'd love to know.
Thanks
