Speaking at Winona State University last week, sex columnist Dan Savage made the following comments regarding why he believes the SPLC was correct in placing the Family Research Council on their hate groups list.
Tony Perkins and the Family Research Council — First of all, they tell, Tony Perkins tells parents whose kids come out to reject them. Tony Perkins tells the parents of queer kids to do what Tony Perkins damn well knows drives those kids to suicide — doubles their already quadruple rate of suicide. Why would someone who calls themselves a Christian do that? Because every dead gay kid is a victory for the Family Research Council. They argue that the gay lifestyle is sick and sinful and dangerous and they point to the suicide rate, and then they turn around and do everything in their power to make sure that suicide rate does not come down and to drive it up. Tony Perkins sits on a pile of dead gay kids every day when he goes to work — and he calls himself a Christian. I don’t understand how real Christians let that little fucker get away with that.
Controversial language? Sure. Is he correct? In my opinion, absolutely.
The Family Research Council and Tony Perkins in particular have made it their life's effort to disparage the LGBT community, furthering completely discredited lies in their effort to return America to the 1950s and force us back into the darkness of our closets. Their dangerous rhetoric does immeasurable and grave harm to gay youth and LGBT adults alike.
Today, Perkins responded to Savage's remarks on Mike Huckabee's radio program with a not-so-veiled threat of doing something or other to stop Savage from hurting his feefees ever again.
As my teenagers would say, he has some issues. He is a man with some real deep-seated issues ... and Dan Savage is nowhere near, he's a hundred and eighty degrees from the positions that we have taken. It's wrong and I will tell you this, we are pursuing everything possible to deal with him because he is out of control. This is the bottom line, Mike: is that if you don't embrace and celebrate homosexuality and everything associated with it, then you are intolerant. And the truth of the matter is, let's just be very, very truthful, and that's what we deal in is the truth, that even if society embraced homosexuality, there would never be that sense of self-fulfillment because it's outside the way God created man and woman. And that's the bottom line. They cannot erase that, even if they get every law on the books changed, it will never change that.
Right. Tony Perkins deals in truth. The Family Research Council deals in truth. That's how they ended up on the ignoble hate groups list. Truth. Care to tell us what avenues you are pursuing to "deal" with Dan Savage, Tony? What's the plan? A lawsuit perhaps, or something more sinister like a National Day of Prayer for Dan to get a flat tire? I'm very curious.
In the meantime, I'll be headed home shortly to watch the debate while getting dinner ready for my husband. I can't think of anything more fulfilling, Tony Perkins. And that is the truth.
