Looking at the fact checking after the debate, the person that told the biggest whoppers was pretty much declared the winner.
Mitt Romney turned in a polished performance in last night's presidential debate – and revealed himself to be an accomplished and unapologetic liar
Today Krugman points out:
"The press just doesn’t know how to handle flat-out untruths,"
~Paul Krugman
Now you could argue that Obama should have seen this coming, one could also argue with a
NATO ally on the brink of war he had other pressing matters on his mind.
I would argue that the lies came so thick and fast that more than one person was required to refute them in real time.
The sad bit is, they first declared the winner, then some noted the lies.
The only loser in this type of shenanigans are the many voters that just don't have the time nor the inclination to follow the minutiae, they rely on the press to do the checks and balances. The press quite frankly isn't up to the job, but it is after all their principle function.
Perhaps before they declare a winner, they should examine the substance, just a thought in this hectic world.
I'm tired of the Romney campaign's reply when asked for the details of "we don't have the time", there is in fact more than enough time. The details matter, and it is about time our crappy press pushed hard enough to get an answer.
