My last comment here was more than 48 hours ago. During that time, I've read a lot of posts and some comments about the debate on Wednesday, many of them questioning President Obama's performance - understandable, since apparently he questions it himself - and many offering advice for the next debate.
I've just done a database search and find that not one Kossack has - to this point - remarked on something that occurred to me in the first 10 minutes Wednesday.
What did I search on? 'Morgan Freeman'. Why did I do so?
It seemed to me from very early in the debate that President Obama was modeling himself on the actor Morgan Freeman. Yes, Freeman has played God in the movies, but more importantly he has also played the President of the United States. I well recall him in that role in Deep Impact. (Help me out; has he been President elsewhere as well?)
America loves Morgan Freeman. America trusts Morgan Freeman. He is a no-bullshit black man who is first of all a fellow-citizen indisputably committed to the same civic values as all Americans; he is 'us', not some sort of 'other' - it is not possible to attribute 'otherness' to him.
Morgan Freeman has had a long illustrious career and I am tempted to cite each and every one of his films: Driving Miss Daisy, The Unforgiven, The Shawshank Redemption, the multiple times he has been Alex Cross ... etcetera. That would be delightful ... but diversionary to the import of this diary.
Review the debate tape again and imagine Morgan Freeman on that stage. Does that explain anything for you?
That's all.
Thanks for reading.
