I live in Johnson County, Kansas (the affluent suburbs of Kansas City) which is reliably Republican and conservative. Lots of megachurches, for example. But here it is just a month from the election and so far I have seen exactly ONE Romney bumper sticker and NO yard signs! (I've actually seen a couple of Obama stickers, and gotten a few honks and thumbs up for my I ♥ Obamacare sticker.) That's definitely different from 4 years ago. Does this mean that there's more of a Republican enthusiasm gap than is being reported? Kansas voted in a bunch of extreme right-wingers in 2010, but a lot of people have gotten very uneasy about them and their extreme tax and budget-cutting. It may be a Republican, conservative state, but there has always been extremely strong support for excellent schools and infrastructure here and people have been willing to tax themselves for those. Now they're scared that the schools are going to be hit hard next year. So there's definitely some voter remorse going on, and at least a chance for some of the worst offenders in the state legislature to get punished at the polls. We'll have to see. The extremists did well in the Republican primaries, but turnout was abysmally low so they were able to win with very small total votes. They may not do so well when there's a larger turnout for the general election. Some of the moderate Republican legislators who lost to extremists in the primary have endorsed the Democratic candidates in the general election! So things could still be interesting in otherwise Red Kansas!
