Many of you have heard me despair of my lovely, loony Louisiana. With the nation's most famous tax virgin as governor, a legislature that appears to believe government's responsibility ends after legislators and their staffs have enough SUVs and a congressional delegation brimming with Tea Party stars, we are something of a Republican Dream State.
Thus it was with surprise and delight that I read this little story last night:
La. HS Students Celebrate Mock Election
President Barack Obama emerged as the candidate of choice for high school students from across the state who gathered to celebrate Vote Dat!, Louisiana's 2012 Presidential Mock Elections, sponsored by the Secretary of State's Office and Cox Communications.
Approximately 88,600 K-12 students from 280 public, private and home schools in 55 of 64 parishes cast a vote in the mock election. President Obama was "re-elected" by a margin of 51.29% (Obama) to 48.71(Romney).
While the so-called grownups of Louisiana continue their headlong rush to a hospital-free, school-free Libertarian paradise, it seems our children, at least, is learning.
And though, for the time being, we shall remain the darling "laboratory" for harebrained Republican ideas, I find myself today surprised by the hope of better, more rational days ahead.
