Anyone who's had email for more than a week has probably gotten a right wing screed or two about congressmen getting pensions equal to a zillion dollars a day for life if they serve six minutes, or about Obama being a socialist Kenyan terrorist, or the Clintons having personally murdered half the white house staff. I've managed to bore most of my conservative relatives into not sending them to me by replying to all with long winded rebuttals.
And anyone with a brain who has gotten one of those screeds has probably discovered snopes.com, as I did long ago. I visit the place on a regular basis, frequently checking the "What's New" page to see what the wing nuttery has been up to lately. It all got me wondering: Why don't I ever see this sort of thing coming from the left?
So I decided to peruse the "Top 25" list to see if I was just missing out on some liberal wing nut fun, but I'm not. Here's the top 10:
1) Obama's Wedding Ring
Nutty screed about how Obama's ring has an Arabic insription, rated false.
2) Debt Free America Act
Warning about Obama raising a 1% fee on all credit card transactions. False.
3) The Affirmative Action President
Anti-Obama opinion piece incorrectly credited to the Washington Post.
4) Executive Orders
List of 923 executive orders supposedly issued by Obama. False.
5) Dhimmitude
Rant about Muslims being exempt from Obamacare requirements. False.
6) Cell Phone Salute
Photo of Obama exiting Marine One and saluting while on the phone. True, but pointless. Snopes also included a hilarious photo of Bush saluting while carrying his dog.
7) Deer Crossing
Non-political joke about citizens asking to move a deer crossing sign because the deer should cross elsewhere.
8) Congressional Reform Act of 2012
Anti-congress rant full of misinformation and half-truths, but with something of a pox on all your houses flavor.
9) I'm Tired
Conservative rant incorrectly attributed to Bill Cosby.
10) Hobby Lobby
Hobby Lobby lawsuit over contraceptive mandate. True.
There are more conservative rants, mostly false, among the remainder of the Top 25, but the end of the list is my personal favorite:
25) Obama's Son
A hilarious bit from The Onion about Obama's mysterious 19 year old son that some people thought was real.
So there you have it. Mostly conservative screeds. Most of them wholly or partly wrong. All this leads to the question: Why is it only conservatives who are this gullible? It's as if these people don't have a functional BS meter.
