There will be tons of pressure coming from the austerity crowd; those Simpson-Bowles phony Democrats that think that cutting earned benefits is the serious solution to what ails this nation. Never mind that Obama's opening statement of raising taxes on the rich by $1.6 Trillion or that cutting wasteful Defense spending would be more effective and less electorally poisonous to real Democrats. At this point, I am still hoping that the Democrats on the "Gang of Eight" are real Democrats and will listen to reason. But we should also pressure the Republicans too since the American people spoke on this issue by re-electing Barack Obama.
So I have gathered contact info for those eight Senators, and the White House. Let them know that you feel that Social Security should be off the table as Harry Reid said. I definitely urge those living in Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma and Virginia to contact their Senators who are on the Gang of Eight.
K.I.S.S(Keep it super simple) Talking Points by request
For the Congresscritters:
Please tell Senator [fill in the blank] (or Representative [fill in the blank]) that I agree with Senator Harry Reid about "not messing with" Social Security. The President has a clear mandate that the voters gave him to slightly raise taxes on those making over $250,000 and he has a mandate to not touch Social Security.
As a constituent of Senator [blank] (or Representative [blank]), this is the most important issue to me, and I will remember who stood up for me when I next go into the voting booth. So please, make sure that Social Security is off the table in the fiscal negotiations. I feel very strongly that raising the eligibility age, messing around with the COLA, or any benefit cut is the wrong course of action.
Thank you for listening to my concerns and have a nice day. (also give address and such if they ask for it)
To the White House:
Please tell the President that I voted for his re-election so that he could have the power to raise taxes on the wealthiest Americans, and please tell him that he has a mandate to leave Social Security alone or as Harry Reid said "let's not mess with it". I feel very strongly that raising the eligability age, messing with COLA, or any benefit cut is not what I voted for.
Please let the President know that I will back him up on his plan to raise taxes by $1.6 Trillion on the wealthiest Americans. Please tell him that I will work hard to make sure he has support if he leaves Social Security alone in these upcoming fiscal negotiations.
Thank you for listening to my concerns and have a good day.
