Just this......
I pledge ALLEGIANCE, to the flag of the UNITED States of America. And to the Republic, for which it stands. ONE Nation, under God, INDIVISIBLE, with liberty and justice for ALL.
Just Sayin.
Has anyone been thinking about what this pledge means to them, after the election?
I learned this in kindergarten. Didn't you? Citizenship 101. The secessionists did too.
Perhaps as in so many things learned in kindergarten, it went into our consciousness along with nursery rhymes. The words are abstract concepts that babies cannot understand at that age.
By the time one is capable of abstract thought and capable of understanding the meaning of words such as allegiance, indivisible, liberty and justice....one is distracted by hormones and daily living----so that it becomes something said rarely, and only at ceremonial occasions.
There was a time in my life when I did not say the pledge. During the 1960's, when my people were being attacked in the streets with dogs by the police; when little girls were bombed in churches; when my little old pastor led our tiny church on a march through our very racist city; when my friends were being sent home in body bags from Vietnam; I found it hard to say it sincerely. I stood for it, silently and in protest, not wanting to say it until I could say it with sincerity.
I've grown up. I have been able to say it as an adult, since Clinton was elected. I have never said it with more sincerity than I do now. Why? Because I understand how important that pledge is in holding our country together. A tiny little pledge. A huge pledge.
I mean it now. Do you?
