As many of us predicted, Gallup peeked at the other pollsters and chickened out at the end. Their last poll had Romney with a 5% lead (and had gotten as high as 7%). Well, they didn't want to be the laughing stock of the industry, so they mushed their numbers down for this final poll:
49-48 Romney.
And, then Gallup's polling head Frank Newport weasles out thusly, "“It’s tied today..." And, in the Registered vote, Gallup has Obama up 49-46, providing them further "cover".
Rasmussen moved to a +1 Romney poll today, but they still have one more coming out tomorrow. We'll see if they weasle back to the center in the AM.
UPDATE: Forgot to note that in the last couple of election cycles, Gallup's Registered Voters (RV) final poll has been more accurate than their Likely Voters (LV) polls. So, Obama's +3 in the RV may be more relevant than his -1% in the LV (not to mention a convenient cover for the Gallup folks). I think the reason is that whoever is doing their LV screen is putting more confidence in their model, rather than just taking the voter's word that they are going to vote!
