As we all know, on the day Obama was getting sworn in to office, the GOP leadership was plotting how they would ensure he fails.
They plotted how they'd prevent him from fixing the economy.
They plotted on how they'd prevent him from doing anything useful for the American People.
They plotted on how they'd prevent him from being re-elected.
Well, tonight, they failed - woefully.
They plotted on how to get more "angry white men" out to vote.
They plotted on how to suppress the vote.
This is as much a win for Obama as it is a failure of the GOP plan from the last 4 years. In so far as the election was a referendum on Obama, it was also a referendum on the obstruction of the last for years.
As we learnt from the Bush years, failure has never stopped Republicans from doubling down on failed ideas.
Watching Fox News and seeing their talking points -
1) This wasn't a "structural" defeat. The party doesn't need to change anything. They could've one if Romney had sold a "big idea" better. They could've won if they got more of their voters out. That this country is center-right and this was just a liberal election. In short, keep on doing what you're doing, just sell it better next time.
2) Obama should now compromise because that's what you do when you win. This is the overarching theme i keep hearing from them. He should be the first person to compromise. He should reach out and work with Republicans now because according to them, he didn't do it these last 4 years.
To me, this means we can expect more of the same from them for the next 4 years. The thing that gives me some optimism on this front is that I think Obama is expecting this. I fully expect Obama to be much tougher on Republicans this time around after the initial obligatory olive branch is knocked out of his hand.
Only time will tell, but boy - what a night!
