I am immigrant from India living in the US for nearly 12 years ( not yet a citizen ) but getting there. I was brought up in a fairly conservative society and family in India with very strong familial ties and values. I am fairly devout and sincerely believe in a higher power. I earn in the low six figures. I don't believe in abortion and still think that being gay is a little off-normal. I should be a natural part of the Republican party. No I am not. Even though I am just a Green Card holder living in Texas, I gave money to the Obama campaign. Heck, I even contributed to the Elizabeth Warren campaign.
Why?
Reasonableness. That is the only one word. As I see, the GOTP as it stands now, is plain just not reasonable on every thing from Women's rights, to abortion to gay rights.
As I said, I am not in favor of abortion but strictly believe that parents ( and more importantly women) should have control over their bodies and hence abortion should be legal. The reasonable stand should have been that for foetuses over a certain age, abortion should be banned otherwise, it should be OK and certainly so in the face of rape, incest etc.
As I said, I have my opinions about homosexuality but very very very very strongly believe in people's ability to expressing the way they love one another. The society has got no right to interfere in one's personal lives. I will judge a person based on their ethical and intellectual fiber rather than looking at them thru some church based distortion field.
At just about every thing, the GOTP have distanced themselves from reasonableness. Remember, no to 10 dollars of cut for 1 dollar of revenue.
Reasonableness prevailed in this country!
