What are DC lobbyist Grover Norquist and right-wing billionaire Dick DeVos working on together? They are in Michigan, attacking the rights of workers. And their bill drops today.
Michigan Republicans in legislature, pressured by their right-wing donors, are gunning to pass a "right to work" (RTW) bill by the end of the year, making the the birth state of the American labor movement into the 24th "right to work" state.
Despite the name, "right to work" means fewer rights, not more. RTW effectively defunds the ability of unions to advocate for workers.
In 23 previous states, this has lead to:
An average reduction in wages, for both union and non-union workers, of $5,333 a year.
A 21% fewer people with health insurance, among both union and non-union workers.
An increase in the poverty rate among both union and non-union workers. RTW states have an average poverty rate of 12.5%, versus 10.2% in free bargaining states.
An increase in workplace injuries and fatalities, in both union and non-union workplaces. The rate of workplace deaths is 51% higher in RTW states, where unions can't speak up on behalf of workers.

This is not a partisan issue. The Republican Senate Majority Leader Randy Richardville has opposed "right to work" in the past.
The Republican Governor, Rick Snyder, previously said he would not pursue such a law. Last night, he said RTW is "on the agenda," in the lame duck session.
What happened in the meantime? DC fat cat lobbyist Grover Norquist came into town and lobbied for the bill, and anti-public school billionaire Dick DeVos pressured lawmakers and paid for radio ads that have started running to smear unions and lie about what this law actually does.
This is an attack on unions, that much is true. But this "right to work" law is WRONG for everyone. Union or non-union, public or private sector, these laws depress wages, create unsafe workplaces, and effectively steal workers' ability to advocate for their rights.
Stand with Michigan workers, every single one of them. Sign our petition to stop the "right to work" bill.
We just beat Mitt Romney. Let's stop lobbyists and billionaires from imposing his economic vision on Michigan. Let's do this.
