I am a member of RKBA and I want to have this conversation. Before I start I want to say this.
Let's try to be constructive. It is not constructive for people who are in favor of more gun-control to call others who disagree with them them murderers or accomplices to murder. The same principle applies to those on the other side of the isle.
I want to see a reduction in violent crime and reduce the number of casualties of events like this. So let's make sure that any legislation we suggest will absolutely do those things.
Whether we like it or not we do have a right to keep and bear arms. Therefore I believe any restriction of that right should be as limited as practicable.
Any new laws should apply equally to everyone. No special dispensations for the police, celebrities, media personalities or politicians who can afford armed security. Their lives are no more important than anyone else's. The exception here would the the President, the Vice President and their families.
We can't ignore the fact that violent crime and gun crime rates are lower now, even with increased gun sales. Why that is happening is not clearly defined but it certainly appears that increased gun sales aren't causing the crime rate to go up.
Gun owners like myself are not the problem, we are not inclined nor determined to commit such acts.
I believe that most of these atrocities and other violent gun crimes are perpetuated by those with mental health issues or career criminals. We need to work on policies that limit and prevent their ability to commit such acts.
Right to Keep and Bear Arms is a DKos group of second amendment supporters who have progressive and liberal values. We don't think that being a liberal means one has to be anti-gun. Some of us are extreme in our second amendment views (no licensing, no restrictions on small arms) and some of us are more moderate (licensing, restrictions on small arms.) Moderate or extreme or somewhere in between, we hold one common belief: more gun control equals lost elections. We don't want a repeat of 1994. We are an inclusive group: if you see the Second Amendment as safeguarding our right to keep and bear arms individually, then come join us in our conversation. If you are against the right to keep and bear arms, come join our conversation. We look forward to seeing you, as long as you engage in a civil discussion.
As always, if you're interested in joining RKBA, message

I am going to keep this short. In light of the Sandy Hook shooting I am in favor of the following controls:
We need to institute a single payer health care system. This will aid in addressing the root cause of many of these types of acts, the mental health of the shooters.
Ban 20 round and 30 round magazines and ammo drums.
Only allow licensed firearm dealers to sell weapons at gun shows.
Limit magazine capacity for all new semi-automatic handguns to 10 rounds.
Ban semi-automatic handguns with a magazine capacity greater than ten rounds but institute a buy back program or provide a voucher so they can be replaced by a new lower capacity handgun.
As an aside was anyone else disturbed at seeing the police that responded looking more like they were part of the military instead of the police force. We really do need to end the militarization of the police.
This will be a bit of a hit and run. The time zone I am in prevents me from having any meaningful participation in the comments. I will respond when time allows.
