Received this email today from Senator Kay hagan (D. NC) with a petition urging congress to move fast and renew the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA):
Tick tock. Tick tock. The seconds are counting down as we watch time run out in Washington, D.C.
We are fast approaching an unthinkable situation where critical protections for America's women and families are about to expire. If the House of Representatives doesn't renew the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) before December 31, it will be our reality.
That's why I held a press conference this week with five other women senators, urging House Republicans to act swiftly and pass VAWA before the end of the year. Now Senator Patty Murray and I are circulating an online petition, and we need your help.
I urge you to stand with me and tell House Republicans to put aside petty partisanship and gamesmanship -- pass the inclusive, bipartisan, and Senate-passed VAWA reauthorization today, before it's too late.
If the House of Representatives does not take action, the nearly 20 years of life-saving assistance that the Violence Against Women Act provides to women and families throughout North Carolina will disappear. The law provides shelter and justice to battered women who need both, and it is the cornerstone of our efforts to combat domestic violence.
The Senate reauthorized an improved, expanded VAWA more than 240 days ago with a bipartisan vote of 68-31. Since then -- while House Republicans have been stalling -- there have been more than 3 million incidents of violence against women.
Time is running out for these women. Join me in urging the House of Representatives to stand up for victims of domestic abuse everywhere and reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act today!
I am in awe that politics is being put in front of the safety of Americans. Help me ensure that 911 operators are able to take calls and respond to them like everyone expects them to do.
Sincerely,
Senator Kay Hagan
