he NRA had a week to prepare, in their words, "meaningful contributions" to the discussion on gun violence after the tragedy in Newtown where 20 children and six adults were killed by a madman with semi-automatic weapons, high-capacity magazines and body armor. What NRA President Wayne LaPierre announced to the world in their press conference on Friday (strangely, a press conference with no questions allowed) is the idea that armed officers should be positioned in every school in America.
The truth is the NRA is not an organization for "gun enthusiasts" - it is a lobbying group for the gun industry.
More under the satanic orange croissant...
The truth is the NRA is not an organization for "gun enthusiasts" - it is a lobbying group for the gun industry. That is why there was no talk at all about restrictions on buying semi-automatic weapons, high-capacity magazines and body armor, no talk of closing the gun show loophole that allows guns to be sold without a license - absolutely no meaningful discussion on preventing weapons designed to kill a lot of people in a short amount of time from getting into anybody's hands besides the military and the police. The NRA wants armed officers at schools because that means the gun industry (the industry they lobby Congress for) can SELL MORE GUNS.
26 people died last week, and all the NRA can do is say America needs more guns - and not only that, more guns in the same buildings where our children learn. It's an amazing display of capitalist opportunism, almost Machiavellian in its boldness.
The gun lobby didn't hold a "press conference" on Friday - it unveiled what we call in retail a STRATEGIC MARKETING PLAN.
