I swear, the next person I hear talk about the 'lazy, worthless bastards' on public assistance that 'won't get a job and are taking advantage of the system' is gonna get tire tracks across the forehead when I run them over. I get $800 a month in Social Security Disability. Can you live on $800 a month, even as one person? I'm married. My wife gets no benefits because she's Canadian and can't work because she has severe lupus. $800 a month to support two people.
That doesn't even pay my rent.
I'm tired of people saying that those of us on public assistance are living it up on their tax dollars. Yeah. I'm really living it up. I just bought spinning rims for my wheelchair!
And of course, most people will say I'm not the one that they are complaining about. They're complaining about the guy that really does sit at home and collect his benefits when he could be out working. I would understand and even sympathize with this argument if there were actually enough of them to make a difference, but as someone who lives on these programs, I go to the offices regularly and see the people who live on government assistance just like I do. I see them every day. I can tell you from personal experience that the lazy, worthless bastards are few and far between. The vast majority of them are just like me, people just trying to survive.
I am the face of the people living on government assistance. When you talk about cutting these programs, it's people like me that will be hurt the most. I just think that everyone should know that, know what it is that they're really doing.
