Here's a pretty good example of political jujitsu from Rick Santorum—a new ad which his campaign says will be airing statewide in Michigan. It features a Romney look-alike carrying a machine gun loaded with mud, and as the narrator attacks Mitt Romney for attacking fellow Republicans, the Romney look-alike scampers around an empty factory taking shots of mud at Santorum—but missing. In the end the only person with mud on him is Mitt Romney.
From a creative point of view, it's an effective ad. The only problem is that you need the volume to be up for it to make any sense—if you're not paying attention throughout the ad, the lack of text on the screen makes it hard to figure out what's going on. Other than that, however, it's an effective way to inoculate Santorum from Romney's expected onslaught of negative attack ads.
Of course, the big irony with the ad is that even though Santorum is getting sanctimonious about Romney's attack ads, Santorum wouldn't be where he is today if Romney hadn't destroyed his opponents. Don't forget, Romney's opponents are also Santorum's opponents. So perhaps Santorum should be thanking Romney. Instead, Santorum is attacking him.
