We already knew that the growing anger toward Scott Walker and his henchmen in Wisconsin has the right running scared. But we got a lovely glimpse of just how desperate they are today. Apparently the fundies are now saying that those opposing Fitzwalkerstan are influenced by idolatry.
Earlier today on Truth that Transforms, a radio program put out by the former television ministry of noted fundie luminary D. James Kennedy (which has since broken off from Kennedy's former church, Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church in Fort Lauderdale), host John Rabe and Richard Land of the Southern Baptist Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission claimed the recent protests against Walker are rooted in worship of government.
Rabe: It does seem that there is a theological issue at stake here as well. When we are trained to look to government to supply our every need, it is very tempting for that government to become a replacement for God in our lives. You know, we tend to worship our idols and I think we’ve seen from the uprisings in places like Greece and frankly even in the United States in the Wisconsin state capitol last year, what happens when that god stops providing.
Land: That’s right, that’s exactly right.
Uh huh. I suppose that it's idolatry to call out the ugly, nakedly aggressive and in some cases outright illegal practices of Walker and his cronies. After all, we wouldn't want the lightning bolt to come down, would we?
To believe Rabe and Land, we should have just sat down and shut up rather than call out the fact that Repub legislators were sworn to secrecy about a legislative map that judges have all but said is unconstitutional. And the state senate Dems should have just rolled over on the collective bargaining deal. And state legislators illegally voting on each others' behalf? Just let that slide.
If the current trends keep up, Walker is not only going to lose the recall, he's going to lose big. I'd pay money to hear how Rabe and Land will explain that.
