Arnie Gundersen has a new video. Arnie posits that the top of the containment on reactor one at Fukushima was leaking before the explosion.
New Containment Flaw Identified in the BWR Mark 1 from Fairewinds Energy Education on Vimeo.
I have watched all of Arnie's videos. It makes me wonder why we are still running BWR mark I reactors. They are replete with design problems and they are getting older. Arnie has had several videos explaining the design problems with these old reactors.
ON top of the bad design these reactors are getting old. When you buy a new car, usually it will break down right away or it will run for a while and then as it gets older it will start experiencing failures. One would think older nuclear reactors would also suffer failures just like an antique auto.
And if one of our reactors goes Fukushima it would be an absolute disaster. Recently, there was a problem with the Byron reactor in Illinois and it had to vent tritium. Tritium is a beta emitter with a 12 year half life. This was not a safe emission. There is no harmless dose of radiation.
And if this reactor were to go South and explode like Fukushima it would ruin Chicago. The winds come hard from the west into Chicago and anything that emits from this plant will blow over Chicagoland.
Arnie has proved to my satisfaction anyway that these older Mark I reactors are not safe, but the NRC still claims that they are safe, it makes one wonder if any nuclear can be safe. How can anything be safe if the NRC never finds a problem?
