I've set up a new DK group (current membership: me!) to showcase diaries that present research into specific people, groups, or institutions that obstruct progress on specific issues, such as the right wing's ever-growing number of "intellectual ammo shops".
The diaries I'm especially looking to showcase tend to be overlooked, because they don't visit moral or legal condemnation on their subject matter, or come down to a "gotcha" moment, or try to gin up outrage. They just aim to provide the reader with the tools necessary to understand how a particular group, person, or organization functions, so that the reader can take more informed and effective action in the future.
I guess you could call it "oppo without the punchline." See the group blog for a few tentative examples.
By their nature, diaries of this type are relatively unlikely to find their way into either the Community Spotlight or the rec list (occasional exceptions notwithstanding). But as I can say from experience, they often require a great deal of work, and it can be dispiriting to feel like they're just slipping away without any sort of recognition at all. So I'm hoping that this group can provide a little bit of such recognition for diarists working in this genre.
The group is called "Tactful Saboteurs," in reference to a classic Frank Herbert story.
If you'd like to join, just say the word.
(I'll be sending out some invites as well, but am a little hesitant as I haven't done this before and am not sure of the etiquette.)
