My predictions for the future are no better than anyone else's, and not much better than random, but one thing I said a year ago still stands - moderate Republicans (what's left of them) should support Rick Santorum. I said then and believe now that whoever the Republicans nominate will get creamed in November, and if it's Romney, moderates on the right (what's left of them) will be flushed down the toilet for good.
Once upon a time there was a Republican party that provided a certain amount of balance to the political scene. Although I firmly believe that America needs decisive progressive leadership, I see a responsible conservative voice and loyal opposition as ultimately beneficial for the country. Unfortunately, we have to go back to the days of Everett Dirksen and Charlie Halleck to find that sort of thing.
Moderate Republicans made the tactical decision to ride Tea Party passion to victory in 2010, and now they are stuck with the consequences. A year and a half later they have demonstrated that Republicans can't govern because the right-wing radicals don't want to govern and won't let any sensible law pass. The wingnuts don't want to do anything except shrink government small enough to fit into a vaginal probe.
Moderate Republicans (what's left of them) are toast if Romney is the nominee. He'll have no support from the evangelicals, and he'll have no message unless the Republicans can find a way to crash the economy before the election. All of the blame for the ensuing debacle will fall on the moderates, and they'll have no place to hide.
Moderate Republicans (what's left of them) must make the ultimate loser, Rick Santorum, their loser. Otherwise, the future of the party will belong to the radicals, and moderates of the right will fade into oblivion.
