Following up on my previous diary entries about why continuing the Cuban embargo is no longer in the best interests of the US, I have created a petition on the White House's We the People site. I hope that you will read my previous diary entries and then considering supporting the petition, which is at http://wh.gov/...
If you agree with this position, I would be grateful if you would use your own diaries and other personal social networks to forward this message and encourage others to sign, since 25000 signatures are needed within a month to obtain a response from the White House.

If you agree with this position, I would be grateful if you would use your own diaries and other personal social networks to forward this message and encourage others to sign, since 25000 signatures are needed within a month to obtain a response from the White House. Here's a sample of the message that you could send:
"I'm writing to encourage you to sign a petition to end the 50-year-old US embargo with Cuba, which has long outlived its original purpose. Today, the embargo is detrimental to both the political and economic interests of the US. American goods are already available in Cuba, obtained indirectly from other countries. As one example, the Cuban telecom monopoly, ETECSA, provides Internet services in its offices with Dell computers running Windows. In the absence of an American presence, China is now filling a big part of the role formerly played by the Soviet Union, establishing a strong economic base in Cuba, and investing heavily.
Ending the embargo is a business decision, made to improve the balance of trade, to open up a new market to American companies, to respond to competition from China, and to reduce the deficit. People will argue that we shouldn't be doing business with the Castro brothers and their anti-American rhetoric. But we do business with characters and countries who are no better (and perhaps worse).
The embargo has lasted much too long already, and its continuation is no longer in the best interests of the US. I hope that you will sign the petition at http://wh.gov/... to accelerate its end."
