Late yesterday, Pat McCrory hired veteran Republican media consultant Fred Davis as his media consultant.
With this hire, McCrory showed a lot about his true character. For those who don't remember, Davis is the guy who created the now-infamous "Debbie Spend It Now" ad for Pete Hoekstra's Senate campaign. He thought it would be a bright idea to have a girl speaking in broken Chinglish to "congratulate" Debbie Stabenow for express-mailing American jobs to China. The result was one of the most disgustingly racist ads of recent history, and in all likelihood has handed Stabenow a third term. McCrory HAD to know about the blowback Hoekstra got from this ad--so why would he, or any halfway responsible Republican, touch Davis with a 10-foot pole?
I have to admit, McCrory was one of the few Republicans I still liked. But what respect I still had for him is gone. While I haven't decided which Democratic candidate for governor to support, either one of them would have more scruples than a guy who seems to think creating racist ads is even remotely okay.
