Former county attorney Andrew Thomas and two of his hench-women were disbarred/suspended for actions they took in their official roles. Apparently the county spent nearly $1.5MM defending them. The "news" is that they are being cut off from county funding and will have to pay for any appeals out of their own pockets.
So here is my question: Since they have essentially been found guilty of the offenses (hence their disbarrments), can we as tax payers sue them personally to recover that money?
I mean, even just then $900k spent on Thomas' defense is hardly pocket change. Yes, it's a drop in the bucket of Maricopa County's $2.3B budget, but every penny counts.
This is one of the things that annoys me. Just how much is it costing the county to defend these crooks? We know $1.5M for this debacle, but the Sheriff Joe suits in progress as well as potential ones to be filed by the federal government are going to have a MUCH higher price tag. At what point are the people who MADE the decisions responsible, rather than the tax payers.
I only hope that this spring's news will be enough to prevent Sheriff Joe's re-election. If the news of corruption, the spat with the feds and his obvious racism weren't enough, this birther thing makes me think the man has lost all touch with reality. The power has gone to his head, and he needs to be replaced.
