Atheists really don't care whether you believe in a deity or not. At least I don't. However you want to deal with your universe, that's fine by me. It doesn't reflect upon your intelligence, unless you use your religion to justify bad decisions.
When I look upon the universe, what I see is a wonderful happenstance. I don't have to insert a deity into that universe to explain what's going on. As Neil DeGrasse Tyson says, "I believe in science."
Atheists have a moral code. Christianity doesn't give us morality. Society gives us morality. We learn how to be moral (and socially acceptable) by observing the reactions of the people around us to what we do and say. If we don't learn by using empathy, then religion won't give us that. I think those people are truly monsters - doing good things only because their religion tells them to.
When it's this dry, atheists don't pray for rain. Atheists wish the heat cap over Texas would dissipate, and they wonder if maybe we should drag an iceberg down from the north. If there were any left. Or maybe put a superconducting wire in the Gulf of Mexico and shoot it out into space, dissipating heat. They look for real-world solutions to their problems, instead of looking for supernatural intervention to solve their problems.
There are plenty of atheists in foxholes. They're the ones in the corner, looking really unhappy and hunkered down as low as they can go. They're the ones not praying. It is the hardest thing in the world to be an atheist in a foxhole, because we know there's nothing that we can do.
Human beings are always looking for a way to make their lives easier: fires, fences, buildings, clothing and shoes, dogs and horses. There's this constant search to influence the environment. Sacrificing goats, lighting candles, making voodoo dolls, knocking on wood, all fall into the category of what Terry Pratchett calls "a sophisticated way of pleading with thunderstorms." I think it's hardwired into a human brain. Any atheist who's ever had a loved one in the hospital knows this to be true.
Who am I to say you're crazy for trying to change your environment? All I can say is it doesn't work for me. When I shout out to the universe, all I hear is an echo of my own voice.
You will never find a more moral, forthright person than an atheist.
Atheists know there's no hell to punish us for misbehaving. The only person I have to answer to is me, and I see me every day.
Atheists aren't out to destroy religion - they want you to have your religion and be free to worship whatever you wish, as long as it doesn't hurt anybody else.
Atheists just want society to recognize that people are entitled to their lack of belief.
