you got your Talibangelical elected leaders to start praying to their jesus right quickly. I mean, god only wants the sinners to suffer, correct? Maybe they can make sandbags out of Planned Parenthood materials, they certainly won't be good for anything else. Or better yet, you guys can make shelters from those little pocket Constitutions, you know the ones with the jesus founding father stuff in them.

For the "longtimers" here at DailyKos who first started following my severe weather liveblogs about a year ago, it became obvious that liberal empathy was a myth for some folks. The snide political comments got so bad that I had to start including some variation of the following disclaimer in my diaries:
Please keep in mind that any Severe Weather Liveblogs posted are not places for tasteless cracks at other people's expense. Post cheap political/social shots towards those affected at your own risk.
Those worked for the most part, but only for a few months. After a while, people started getting tired of not being able to make fun of those dying and losing everything in the severe weather, and I was called everything up to and including an authoritarian tyrant for trying to "control" political speech on a political blog.
After people derailing a few of my diaries because they wanted a pie fight, I decided to stop putting up the disclaimer. The community has done a pretty good job at moderating the obviously dickish comments, but people still keep posting them.
My question to those who have to post dickish cracks is "Why?"
Why do you think it's okay to make fun of people dying in tornadoes just because of their area's voting patterns?
Why do you think it's okay to sneer at families losing their homes and loved ones just because someone checks a box next to your opponent?
Disasters don't give a flying rat's ass about whom one supports. Obama voters, McCain voters, Santorum voters, anti-gay, super gay, black, white, disabled, rich, poor, they don't care. Just like the honey badger, mother nature don't give a fuck.
Thinking that an entire population "deserves" some sort of disaster because of politics is ignorant in and of itself, notwithstanding the fact that over three quarters of a million people in Alabama voted for Barack Obama in 2008:
...and that 840,000 people in NC were against the anti-gay Amendment one...
Keep those facts in mind. While a majority of an area supports someone like Romney or something idiotic like Amendment One, it doesn't mean that everyone in that area is an asshole. Just as the 1,317,179 voters in favor of Amendment One are walking among us, the 840,803 of us who voted against Amendment One are walking around just the same, shopping at the same stores, living in the same apartment buildings, sharing the same roads and the buses.
So really, why make comments like "Good, it'll wipe out the dumb Republicans" or "Good, the storm is God's punishment for the anti-gay amendment?" That's the best way to stoop to Pat Robertson's level. It looks bad on liberals, but most importantly, it looks bad on you.
If someone has a defense of this warped brand of "liberal empathy," I'd be happy to hear it. Please defend why a small minority of you take joy in seeing anyone -- Democrat or Republican, straight or gay, black or white, child or elderly -- injured in a disaster based on the politics of a region.
Otherwise, and here I go again with my authoritarian self, cut it out.
