Everyone knows about the election in Wisconsin, and the results. Other people will be diving into the results and trying to figure out what exactly happened.
But I want to think about what is next. Not for Wisconsin, not for TX, but for me.
Living in TX, a power play like the Republicans tried in the Mid-West isn't news in a state like Texas. It is considered just another day, and life moves on, it is when something is challenged that people stop and take notice.
The Federal Government stepping in the redistricting fight, and the plan to defund planned parenthood are just two recent examples.
But what does Wisconsin lead to?
I'm already seeing gloating from some of my FB friends in other parts of the country (also not from WI)...
'Former President Bill Clinton said a Walker victory would fuel further moves against organized labor: "All these people who poured all that money into this contest…will say 'See, we got 'em now. We're going to break every union in America,' " he said while campaigning for Mr. Barrett last week.'
hope he's right
-emphasis added by me.
They are advocating for big money in politics to shape our elections and for workers to lose one of the few voices that remain to fight for them.
I don't understand the hatred that unions inspire. They are not perfect, but what else is? I don't know if I attribute it to envy, greed, libertarianism, or something else, but I don't get it.
Instead of people demanding we fix the healthcare system in the country, we went after the unions that made our cars.
Instead of worrying about funding our schools, we went after our teachers.
Instead of wondering why we are incarcerating so many people, we went after the police AND privatized the prisons. A double whammy.
I don't know what I can do as just one person, but it's my last straw. I have to do something. I don't have money to spare, but I still have talent, and I have time. (Unfortunately being unemployed does that for you.)
The local Democratic office has a volunteer if they want me.
