Need something fun to do while waiting for the Olympics opening ceremony? Commercials and athletes' profiles suck up much of the time while we wait patiently for the parade of athletes and the pageant. In the meantime, play the homonym game with Jim and me!
A homonym is each of two or more words that are spelled differently but sound alike.
"Add homonym" sounds like "ad hominem," a phrase we throw around here all the time. If I ask you to "add homonym," I am asking you to contribute two or more words that sound alike.
On the other hand, the online Merriam-Webster dictionary defines "ad hominem" as
marked by or being an attack on an opponent's character rather than by an answer to the contentions made.
Now, strictly speaking, these are phrases that sound alike rather than individual words, but I thought it would be a fun way to begin this diary.
My brother and I play homonyms as part of how we keep in touch. Sometimes our only communication is a pair of words that sound alike. Since we "play" on Facebook, occasionally other people chime in with their own sets of sound-alikes. Another brother and a sister are the most likely to share, but they aren't the only ones. (Do you play word games in your family?)
How many homonyms can you think of? Points are double for really good ones!
Here's a start from me:
pare pair pear
real reel
one won
vale veil
pale pail
so sew sow
Jim (jim in IA) has a few to add, too:
Mine are related to some things about me. For example, I have little hair on top. No comment.
Certain things have made me cry.
bald balled bawled
I enjoyed the drink of fermented grapes while complaining in a clock shop.
wined whined wind
It's hard to decide which was worse, that April storm, or what we did to the male sheep.
whether weather wether
I like to write diaries for Daily Kos. It's like being a diary wright. The task is a weekly rite and calls for some creativity to get the words just right.
I think Jim gets EXTRA points for explaining his word sets.
Now it's your turn. And remember, you'll have more fun if you come back again and again to see what others are sharing.
ADD HOMONYM!
