You really need to read The British Virgin Islands’ Box 438: The Best-Connected, Tax-Friendliest Address in the World?, which is a sidebar to the Vanity Fair story on Romney & Bain, itself featured in a heavily recommended diary.
This is about more than Romney. It is about the interlocking nature of financial elites.
For example, here are the first 3 (of 7) examples of important people from around the world who seem to use that box:
1. S.E.C. records indicate that Box 438 has been used by North American Resources Group Limited, a major shareholder in Harken Energy, the Texas company that purchased President George W. Bush’s failing oil-drilling venture in the 1980s, making him a wealthy man.
2. In 1997, according to real-estate records and the corporate database of the Wyoming secretary of state’s office, Dick Cheney’s wife, Lynne, bought their family home in Jackson, Wyoming, from a Box 438 entity, which had bought it from the director of a Box 438 entity, who had bought it from another Box 438 entity.
3. Scottish Rugby star Bill Gammell’s CEH Australia Ltd., an oil-and-gas company, has used Box 438. Sir Bill, who counts Tony Blair and George W. as friends, was once married to Geraldine Gammell, who directed Prince Charles’s Trust in Scotland.
Look again at the 2nd item - Lynne Cheney bought the family home in Jackson Hole (which became Dick's "legal address" when he ran for VP along side Texan George Bush, from the 3rd of 3 consecutive Box 438 entities.
Just thought this was worthy of a little attention.
