The Day That Was: Day 2
The USA men's basketball team beat France handily in their first match of these Olympics.
Two world records were set, both in swimming; Dana Vollmer of the USA set the record in the women's 100m butterfly (losing her swim cap in the process), and Cameron Van Der Burgh of South Africa became the first South African to win gold in an individual swimming event with style in the men's 100m breaststroke.
And skeet shooter Kimberly Rhode made sure her difficulties getting to London (including her dog eating her plane ticket) paid off as she became the first American athlete to win an individual medal in five straight Olympics with an unbelievable 99 out of 100 targets hit.

Other Highlights
I saw a team handball match today... that sport is intense. I highly recommend catching one of the many handball matches going on tomorrow.
How to Watch
If you're a US cable subscriber, you can stream the whole Olympics for free at NBCOlympics.com.
The top-tier events will also, of course, be on NBC TV.... and other NBC channels (NBC Sports, MSNBC, CNBC, Bravo) will be showing various Olympic doings interspersed among their regular programming throughout the day as well. Check local listings.
Inspiring Olympic Thought of the Day
"The Olympics remain the most compelling search for excellence that exists in sport, and maybe in life itself."
- Dawn Fraser (Australian swimmer, 3-time winner at the Olympics)
Also, if
Samuel L. Jackson's Olympic tweets don't inspire you, then you are incapable of being inspired.
Public Service Announcement
Please rec this diary up! We'd like to get and keep this on the Rec List at least into the afternoon, while events are happening live!
