There was an excellent diary yesterday on the Perseid Meteor Shower, including a thread that many found inspiring.
There were some reports in comments about what people saw last night - thought I'd start a new diary here to let people put up what they saw. I went outside and saw one blaze across the sky before burning out - but then the clouds closed in and that was that.
According to this NASA FAQ on Near Earth Objects (and why we need to study them),
Every day, the Earth is bombarded with more than 100 tons of dust and sand-size particles. Many of the incoming particles are so small that they are destroyed in the Earth's atmosphere before they reach the ground. These particles are often seen as meteors or shooting stars. The vast majority of all interplanetary material that reaches the Earth's surface originates as the collision fragments of asteroids that have run into one another some eons ago....
Hope the skies were clear (and dark) where you were, and that you saw some wonderful things. Feel free to share.
For your edification and entertainment, let me include a stunning video from The Gate to the Mind's Eye, a compilation of computer animation with music from Thomas Dolby and vocals from Dr. Fiorella Terenzi about N.E.O. - near earth objects.
