By now, everyone here has read about the assassination plot against president Obama (actually against the U.S.) concocted by four Army soldiers in Georgia. And, as depressing as this is, what is even more depressing is what the GOP is and has been saying about it.
As far back as August 1, the Huffington Post as well as The Raw Story have been reporting about the TN lawmaker that sent out emails warning of a "fake" assassination plot orchestrated by the administration to stay the election and take over the country by martial law.
Tennessee state Rep. Kelly Keisling (R) on Tuesday morning forwarded an email to his constituents that warned President Barack Obama was planning to impose martial law and indefinitely delay the November elections.
This was presumably based on reports from a florida blogger:
The email, originally written by Florida-based conservative blogger Joe Angione, said there were unconfirmed rumors that Obama planned to stage an assassination attempt on his own life. The incident would be blamed on white supremacists, stirring racial unrest and allowing the President to impose martial law across the nation.
In the blog apparently Angione had this to say...
“The more we talk about the potential for a staged, bogus presidential assassination that would trigger massive civil unrest and possible martial law, the stronger is our defense against it actually occurring,”
This coming on the heals of the TX judge (acting in some capacity as an emergency preparedness manager) that claimed President Obama was going to invade Lubbock with UN forces, and that it was his job to be prepared.
Now since he has been in office, President Obama has had numerous threats - all seething with racial hatred and loathing. Most of these have been rooted out and we as Americans have understood that these are the actions of people that generally live in a fantasy world of white supremacy. This fantasy world is based in a basic belief that President Obama doesnt legitimately belong in office, and therefore these people have the right and duty to overtake what they see as an illegitimate government. Because these folks are loonytunes, we dont generally refer to such threats as traitorous, but what happens when elected and appointed government officials begin to give clear and present comfort to such groups?
It is clear that the two officials above have rendered credence to the idea that president Obama isnt the legitimately elected leader of our country. Afterall, such "preparedness" wasnt necessary for Al Gore or George HW Bush.
It is also clear that these officials have been influenced by a meme circulating in the cloud that seems to know more about such things than should be possible given the ongoing nature of the investigation.
The continued questioning of birthplace, the Navy Seal with some sort of axe to grind, the continued attacks on Pres. Obama as a communist, a muslim, an extremist : that by the way, the GOP has stated WILL continue, have taken their tolls. But to what end? Does the GOP really think they can put this sort of crazy genie back in the bottle once they seize power? If Pres. Obama does lose, and lets hope he doesnt, how exactly do they plan on ruling? (or leading if you are so inclined)? The Ire of these groups will need to be pointed at something or else THEIR government will become the illegitimate government that is targeted. Will it be turned on local politicians that "collaborated" with the Obama administration - (think Vichey Government)? Will anyone that stood for gay rights, or social security be next? Will voter roles be examined to see how certain districts went and they be made to pay the price? When you unleash such hatred, you really cant say where it will go - but this idea that we should be a one party society - unified under the banner of republicanism scares the life out of me.
