According to the Chronicle, Mayor Julián Castro will be the first Latino to deliver the keynote address at the Democratic National Convention, where he will simultaneously raise both his own political profile and that of the city. Castro is scheduled to speak after first lady Michelle Obama on Sept. 4, the opening night of the convention in Charlotte, N.C.
While the Democrats focus on the greater part of the southwestern part of the United States (where Mexican-American population is the strongest), we see the Republican Party trying to compete with the Democratic Party with regard to their convention speakers.
However, unfortunately for the GOP, they decided to use a Latina “tool” via Gov. Susana Martinez (whom several in the Latin community in New Mexico refer to as “Susana the Gusana“). Martinez has been vocal against the Latin and immigrant community when she tried to take away their drivers licenses causing several in the Latin community to regret supporting her due to her Hispanic surname.
Hispanic surnames do not necessarily make politicians Latino or immigrant-friendly, and several in the Latin community are coming to the realization of that fact.
While New Mexicans are wondering where the New Mexico jobs are at when New Mexico reported the shedding of 4000 jobs, I suppose Martinez would rather the undocumented not buy car insurance that would protect New Mexicans? Eliminating drivers licenses eliminates revenues to the state of WILLING immigrants who are trying to do the best they can to protect fellow car owners. A drivers license makes it easier for the immigrant to buy insurance which protects us all.
One of the things the Republican Party will have to come to terms with is that those of Mexican descent account for almost 70% of the Latino population pie. They cannot win over Latino hearts with a token that is behind enforcement only policies against the immigrant community. Latinos will choose their loved ones and families before they support a Party ideology. Republicans are for forcing families apart and Mexicans are well aware of it.
The Republican Party should have picked someone like the former Lt. Gov. Abel Maldonado to speak, and not a woman who is against our gente (people) and the immigrant community.
