If you know anything about the current fever swamp that this the national Republican Party, the following needs no explanation beyond the simple fact that Heather Wilson is a Republican running for the U.S. Senate, and this is the new ad she is running in prime time here in New Mexico:
This is my Social Security Card.
I got it after my dad died, and signed it myself when I was seven.
I didn’t really know what it was, or what it meant.
But I do know this: Every month, a check from Social Security was there for us.
That’s why I’ll always protect it.
And I will never forget that Social Security helped my family.
In the Senate, I’ll protect it for yours.
I’m Heather Wilson and I approved this message.

OMFG.
Of course, during the Bush years, Wilson supported privatizing Social Security, but that is a story for another time.
The story here is the PANIC among Republicans in competitive races when they contemplate the Romney/Ryan ticket!
