It's not so much the words but the tone.
Now we know what he means by "you people". The ones not born with a silver spoon in their mouths. If you haven't made it in the land of limited opportunity then you must be pathetic, slothful and not worth a damn.
You expect to have health care, food on the table and education in the richest country on earth? Scrounger!
Speaking to his people about "you people" in the tone he adopted, one of sneering elitism, is one that I have unfortunately heard all my life, it comes from a sense of gross entitlement from people handed life on a silver platter. His speech was not off the cuff; it is engrained in every fiber of his being, you can here it at every society dinner. You can hear it parroted by so called conservatives who just want to believe that his society is the same as theirs, it is most certainly not, they would be sent around to the workman's entrance.
He thoroughly believes that the rich did indeed build America on their own. That idea the great society is merely a plot to take money away from the builders, it is how they think in their Ayn Rand bubble. It demeans their own sense of self worth, without them we would be nothing, and still scrabbling around in the dust. Just don't look too closely at the reasons for the Great Depression and the Great Recession and how "us folks" saved their collective bacon.
Great nations rarely fall from without, it is corruption within than brings them crashing down. When the wealth of a nation is sucked down the gaping maws of excess and self centered aggrandizement then the rot takes hold. When a handful of plutocrats believe that they can not only buy an election but that they have the inalienable right to do so the rot is very deep indeed.
Great nations are built by personal sacrifice and not by accumulation of power, great societies are built when all participate and believe that participation will not only enrich their own lives, but that of their neighbors as well.
When you offhandedly dismiss whole swathes of the population, the poor, immigrants, people of color and women as the right have been doing for all too long, you eat at the very foundations of the country that made you who you are.
I cannot join with you in this limited shelf life approach, I work too damned hard to let you get away with this heist. I regard paying taxes a duty just as Mitt Romney regards giving a tithe to his church a duty and I also believe they should be based on the ability to pay, and not by how much is paid.
If indeed he wanted our nation to succeed he would be trumpeting.
1] Look at America where no one goes hungry.
2] Look at America where everyone's health care is a priority.
3] Look at America where everyone has equal access to education.
4] Look at America where equality really matters, and is not based on race, gender or creed.
5] Look at America, we built it together.
Rather than the right wings vision for a corrupt and dying nation, one based on self and run for the profit of people like Mitt Romney.
There are two visions for America that the founding fathers believed in, founded in the Age of Enlightenment, and not the dark age it brought tumbling down.
