Have you seen the TV ad for the new movie 'Won't Back Down'? Emotionally compelling (something successful movies do well). With what I see as a series of anti-union/anti-public education films such as Waiting for Superman, seeing a movie about public schools provoked my curiosity.
According to their Wikipedia page, the synopsis says "Two determined mothers, a bartender (Gyllenhaal) and a teacher (Davis), look to transform their children's failing inner city school. Facing a powerful and entrenched bureaucracy and corruption from the teacher's union president (Hunter) and the school's principal (Rhames), they risk everything to make a difference in the education and future of their children."
Corruption from the teacher's union...here we go again. We all know teacher's Unions fight to shrink class sizes, yes providing more jobs but also providing a better learning environment for America's next generation. They stand up for simple things like supplies and air conditioning. Teacher's unions stand up for and strengthen public education.
After digging a little deeper and reading some recent news articles, it's clear, as the same production company that made the anti-union/anti-student film Waiting for Superman, the new movie Won't Back Down is another hit job on our country's children.
Every child deserves opportunity and one of their best sources for opportunity is a good education. Good education comes from good schools, schools that accept students and promote them based on merit, not based on paying tens of thousands a year to a private for-profit company.
